Branthwaite re-emerges as Manchester United target amid defensive rebuild

United were unable to sign Branthwaite from Everton when they first expressed interest in 2024. 

After overcoming injury issues, Branthwaite has made a promising start to the campaign. He has re-established himself as a key figure in Everton’s back line and reminded potential suitors of his quality. The defender has played every minute of Everton’s first four Premier League matches, helping the club keep clean sheets against Crystal Palace and Tottenham.

The price of any potential deal will inevitably affect Manchester United’s ability to sign him.

United still have significant work to do in defence, with the signing of a new left-back expected to be part of their plans as they search for a long-term successor to Luke Shaw. The 31-year-old is approaching the end of his contract, while Lewis Hall is regarded as a potential candidate for the role.

Centre-back is also an area that requires attention. Harry Maguire, now 33, is entering the latter stages of his United career, while the club must also make a decision over Lisandro Martinez’s future. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are both under contract until 2028, but United need to begin considering their longer-term options in those positions.

Manchester United appear ready to invest heavily in their defence, although the scale of their spending may depend on whether they qualify for the Champions League.

Their difficult start to the season, with only four points from their opening four matches, suggests that the road ahead will not be easy.

Branthwaite would be an obvious target if United have the necessary funds, but Everton have consistently insisted that they value the defender very highly. That could mean a transfer fee in the region of £80 million.

Other centre-backs linked with United include Micky van de Ven, Nathan Collins and Edmond Tapsoba. However, Branthwaite’s performances could ensure that he remains one of the standout names on their defensive shortlist.
