Manchester City edge Sunderland 5-3 in eight-Goal Premier League thriller
Manchester City produced a dramatic 5-3 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium in one of the most entertaining Premier League matches of the season so far.
The eight-goal thriller extended City’s unbeaten home run in the league to 15 matches and strengthened their position at the top of the table. Following Arsenal’s defeat on Saturday City knew they had the chance to gain an advantage in the title race.
Match highlight
City started with purpose and City took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes. Enzo Fernández delivered a free‑kick from a tight angle catching Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs off guard at the near post.
However Sunderland responded immediately. Brian Brobbey was sent through by a timed pass from Enzo Le Fée and finished calmly into the corner to level the score.
City regained control midway through the half when Rayan Cherki punished a defensive lapse driving into the penalty area before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.
The visitors showed resilience and struck back once more. Thomas Meunier found space behind City’s defence. Kept his composure before setting up Brobbey for a simple finish into an empty net. The game remained open, intense and full of attacking quality.
City restored their lead before half‑time through Antoine Semenyo, who reacted fastest during a scramble in the Sunderland penalty area. Erling Haaland then missed a chance to increase the lead after Iliman Ndiaye produced a superb dribble to get past Roefs.
Early in the half Semenyo scored again with a composed finish into the far corner to make it 4‑2. Sunderland refused to disappear. Brobbey completed his hat‑trick afterwards becoming the first Sunderland player to score three Premier League goals in a match since Jermain Defoe in 2016.
Sunderland came close to an equaliser when goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a mistake under pressure from Dan Ballard. Ballard’s header looked dangerous. Rúben Dias cleared the ball off the line to protect City’s narrow advantage.
With 10 minutes remaining Haaland finally ended Sunderland’s hopes. The Norwegian striker scored City’s goal, against the only Premier League club he had not previously scored against sealing a remarkable victory.
The result puts Manchester City three points clear at the top of the Premier League ahead of the international break. Sunderland will be disappointed after such a display but Sunderland’s attacking performance showed that Sunderland can compete with the league’s strongest teams.
