Hamburg end goal drought and early-season misery against Cologne

The result offered much-needed relief for Die Rothosen after a disastrous opening to the campaign. Hamburg had entered the contest with three defeats, 12 goals conceded and none scored — their third-worst start in Bundesliga history. 

Against that backdrop, the performance was far from flawless, but it contained the resilience and cutting edge that had been missing in the opening weeks.

Hamburg enjoyed control during the first 20 minutes despite having only 25% possession, yet Cologne gradually began to impose themselves. 

Luka Lochoshvili went close with a header from a corner that was deflected wide, while Capaldo produced a vital block to prevent Thijs Dallinga from getting a clean shot away inside the area.

Cologne’s attacking threat continued to grow. Mikey Moore curled an effort that Daniel Heuer Fernandes pushed around the post, before Said El Mala narrowly failed to make contact with an inviting ball at the far post. 

Heuer Fernandes was then forced into further action, keeping out a powerful El Mala strike and producing a sharp reflex stop to deny Dallinga’s close-range header.

However, in a match that had largely tilted Cologne’s way, Hamburg struck first just before the interval. Capaldo rose highest from a corner and powered a header into the net, scoring only Hamburg’s 13th home goal of 2026 and giving the hosts a priceless lead.

Cologne should have responded quickly after the break, but Moore sent a close-range rebound over the crossbar. 

Hamburg made them pay moments later. Marvin Schwabe failed to deal cleanly with the initial danger, and substitute Poulsen reacted brilliantly to convert Albert Gronbaek’s dangerous cross and double the advantage.

El Mala attempted to drag Cologne back into the contest with another fierce effort, but Heuer Fernandes stood firm once again. At the other end, Poulsen nearly added a third on the counterattack as Hamburg threatened to turn a narrow lead into a statement win.

Cologne finally found a route back in the 90th minute when substitute Ragnar Ache headed home following a slick passing move. But there was not enough time left for a complete comeback.

The victory lifts Hamburg out of the early relegation zone and extends their strong recent record against Cologne, having lost only two of their last 12 meetings. For Cologne, the defeat extends an alarming Bundesliga away run: they are now without a win in 15 trips, their longest such streak in the competition.
