Como make dream Champions League debut with emphatic Leipzig win

It was a historic night for the Italian club, who were still playing in Serie B a little more than two years ago. Backed by a loud home crowd, Cesc Fabregas’ side played with the same high-energy approach that has carried them through their strong start to the 2026-27 season.

Both teams began with a few wasted efforts, but Como were first to create real danger. Just before the 15-minute mark, Maarten Vandevoordt made excellent saves from Anastasios Douvikas and Nico Paz, although the assistant referee later raised the flag for a tight offside.

Como did not have to wait much longer for the opening goal.

Martin Baturina lost his balance while receiving the ball but recovered brilliantly. He controlled with his right foot, set himself and fired a low finish into the corner to put Como ahead.

Leipzig had opportunities of their own. Antonio Nusa forced Jean Butez into a save soon after the goal, while the Como goalkeeper also denied Andrija Maksimovic. Marc Guiu then headed narrowly wide late in the first half.

But Como remained the better side, and they doubled their lead before the break.

Baturina was involved again, this time as the creator. He found Douvikas, who held off Castello Lukeba before placing his finish beyond Vandevoordt and into the corner.

Leipzig started the second half with more intent, but Butez was rarely tested. Como instead struck again through Assane Diao. Douvikas and Paz combined quickly before Diao arrived to drive a diagonal finish past Vandevoordt and into the bottom corner.

Como nearly made it 4-0 around the hour mark. Captain Lucas Da Cunha met another fast break with a volley that flew narrowly wide, with Vandevoordt badly positioned.

Leipzig punished that miss seconds later. Maksimovic struck a superb first-time effort from just outside the area to cut the deficit and offer the visitors a brief route back into the game.

That hope did not last. Leipzig struggled to sustain pressure, while Como were happy to let Martín Demichelis’ team keep possession before looking to break themselves. Ridle Baku went closest for Leipzig with an effort just wide of the post.

Como saw out the match comfortably and added a fourth goal in stoppage time. Máximo Perrone finished into the corner to complete the scoreline and cap an outstanding home performance.

Fabregas could hardly have asked for a better first Champions League night. Como remain unbeaten after four matches this season, while Leipzig have now lost two in a row and face a difficult run against Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
