Leeds go third after ruthless first-half display against Newcastle

Both teams arrived unbeaten after one win and two draws, but Leeds looked sharper from the opening minutes. The result extended their strong run in the league: they have lost only one of their last 13 Premier League matches, winning six and drawing six.

Leeds should have taken the lead in the 14th minute. Jayden Bogle found space and produced a clever finish, but Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek made an excellent save. Bogle, who scored in Leeds’ previous league match at Brighton, tested Hornicek again 11 minutes later with a powerful shot.

Hornicek could do little to stop Leeds in the 32nd minute. Ao Tanaka struck from the edge of the area, and the ball took deflections off Sean Steur and Lewis Miley before looping into the bottom corner. Miley was credited with the own goal.

Two minutes later, Leeds doubled their lead. James Justin delivered a cross for Calvert-Lewin, who rose high to head toward goal. The ball took a slight touch off Bogle on its way in, and the defender was awarded the goal.

Calvert-Lewin was denied soon afterwards when Hornicek made a sharp reaction save from a cross that had found the striker in front of goal. At the other end, Tarik Muharemovic made a goal-saving block to stop Harvey Barnes from pulling one back for Newcastle.

Calvert-Lewin did get his goal in first-half stoppage time. He beat Sven Botman and drove a low finish past Hornicek. It was his third goal in four matches in all competitions, and his eighth Premier League goal against Newcastle — the most he has scored against any opponent in the competition.

Newcastle tried to respond after the interval. Lewis Hall tested James Trafford early on, while Anton Stach hit the side netting after another poor pass from Botman.

Leeds kept attacking and added a fourth just before the hour. Noah Okafor, who worked under Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle at Red Bull Salzburg, met the ball on the edge of the area and hit a crisp half-volley for his first goal of the season.

The home crowd celebrated a complete performance. Newcastle’s supporters had little to cheer until the 90th minute, when Bazoumana Toure scored his first Premier League goal with a late consolation.

Leeds have now gone unbeaten through their first four league matches for the first time since 2001-02. For Jaissle, it was a first defeat as Newcastle head coach and an emphatic end to Newcastle’s six-match unbeaten run against Leeds.
