Seidu leaves Rennes for Nice in late Ligue 1 loan move

The 26-year-old finished the transfer on Friday, September 18. Seidu will stay at Nice for the remainder of the 2026/27 season. The deal has no option to buy so Seidu is expected to go to Rennes when the season ends.

Nice chose to sign this defender after injuries to Antoine Mendy and Moïse Bombito left the club with few options at the back. Even though the French transfer window shut on September 1 the joker rule lets clubs add a player outside the window in certain situations.

Seidu became Nices choice because of his flexibility, strength and long top‑league experience. Seidu can play right‑back, wing‑back or centre‑back giving Nice a tactical edge that may be especially useful as Nice face a tough schedule in the rest of the season.

This move ends a period for Seidu at Rennes. 

The Ghanaian almost left the club during the summer window with Marseille, Strasbourg and Hull City reported to have asked.. The deals did not happen because Rennes and Seidu could not settle on a destination.

During that period Seidu trained alone away from the first‑team group. Later Seidu went back to practice and was listed in Rennes’ squad for the Europa League game against Sturm Graz on September 16. Seidu did not play, staying on the bench as Rennes drew 0‑0 in Austria a few days before Seidu left for the Côte d’Azur.

Seidu comes to Nice with 106 Ligue 1 games gathered from time at Clermont Foot and Rennes. Seidus domestic record is backed by an international background. Seidu has played 25 times for Ghana. Took part in the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups although Seidu was not picked for the Black Stars squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Nice sporting director Roger Ricort said Seidus skill to play roles was a key reason, for the deal. For Seidu the loan offers a chance to start fresh and fight for first‑team football in a club that needs defenders badly.
