Milan fight back from two down as Moreira stuns Serie A leaders Lazio

The result extended Milan’s unusual early-season trend: every Rossoneri league goal has now come after half-time. Lazio lost their perfect start but remain top of the table.

Both teams began with intent. Samuel Chukwueze had an early header saved, while Tijjani Noslin saw a first-time effort stopped at the other end.

Lazio took the lead after 10 minutes. Mattia Zaccagni delivered a low ball across the box, and Matteo Cancellieri arrived at the back post to finish.

Milan had goalkeeper Mike Maignan to thank for keeping the deficit to one. He bravely came off his line to deny Zaccagni, then watched Davide Frattesi send an effort narrowly past the post.

Chukwueze tried to create a response for Milan and picked out Strahinja Pavlovic, but the defender headed over. Lazio then struck again in a strange sequence.

Kenneth Taylor sent in a low cross that Pervis Estupinan accidentally diverted onto his own crossbar. As Milan tried to clear the danger, Noslin headed the loose ball home while Koni De Winter attempted to intervene.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek went close before the interval when his shot deflected off Zaccagni and drifted wide. Mario Gila then had an effort from the resulting corner saved, but Lazio went into the break firmly in control.

Ruben Amorim made three substitutions before the second half, and Milan came out with much more aggression. Chukwueze had a shot blocked by Oliver Provstgaard before delivering another cross that Pavlovic headed straight at Christos Mandas.

Mandas made a fine save from Christian Pulisic’s low shot, but he could do nothing in the 65th minute. Pulisic, on as a substitute, lifted the ball into the box for Moreira, who hit a powerful volley past the Lazio goalkeeper.

Only moments later, Milan were level.

Adrien Rabiot supplied Moreira, who struck another powerful effort into the bottom corner. In the space of a few minutes, Moreira had turned a match Lazio seemed to control into a completely different contest.

Lazio still searched for a winner. Zaccagni had an ambitious shot saved, while Alphadjo Cisse fired wide. Milan also had late openings, with Moreira hitting the side netting after getting into the box and Omari Hutchinson forcing another save in the final minutes.

Neither side could find a decisive third goal. Milan had to settle for a second consecutive draw, but their response after the break will give Amorim encouragement. Lazio, meanwhile, will be frustrated after letting a two-goal advantage slip, though they remain first in Serie A.
