Leipzig make Bundesliga history with five-goal demolition of Hamburg
RB Leipzig put their midweek Champions League disappointment behind them with a ruthless 5-0 win over Hamburg at the Red Bull Arena, setting a new club record with a seventh consecutive home victory in the Bundesliga.
Leipzig had lost 4-1 to Champions League newcomers Como in midweek, but Hamburg proved the ideal opponent for a response. The visitors arrived without a clean sheet in 17 Bundesliga matches and left with a third straight defeat, still waiting for both their first goal and first point of the season.

Leipzig took control from the opening whistle. They had most of the ball and made the breakthrough in the 17th minute.
Ezechiel Banzuzi found space down the right and drove close to the byline before playing a low pass into the six-yard area. Tidiam Gomis met it first time and squeezed his finish into the near corner, leaving Daniel Heuer Fernandes with no chance.
Hamburg were already struggling to contain the home side, and Leipzig doubled their lead as the half-hour approached. Antonio Nusa won the ball from Shafiq Nandja around 40 metres from goal and carried it to the edge of the penalty area. Nandja tried to recover, but his tackle only diverted the ball off Nusa and into the net beyond Heuer Fernandes.
Hamburg did not manage a shot on target in the first half. They came closer early in the second, when David Moller Wolfe reacted to a loose ball in the box. Maarten Vandevoordt made an important close-range save to keep Leipzig two goals ahead.
Leipzig should have made it three around the hour. Gomis sent a high cross in from the right and Christopher Nkunku controlled it superbly, but his shot went narrowly wide of the right post.
The missed chance did not matter for long. Leipzig took complete control in the final stages and scored three goals in five minutes.
First, Willi Orban headed Nusa’s free-kick into the far corner. Nkunku then made it 4-0 with a composed finish from inside the box. Romulo Cardoso completed the rout after stealing possession from Warmed Omari, rounding Heuer Fernandes and rolling the ball into an empty net.
The win lifted Leipzig eight places to fourth, at least temporarily. It was also a timely reminder of their strength at home after the Como setback.
Hamburg, meanwhile, are bottom of the Bundesliga after another difficult afternoon. Merlin Polzin’s side have lost three in a row and have yet to score this season. Their performance in Leipzig gave them little to take into the next match.
