Sevilla break Valencia resistance through Iglesias to claim narrow victory

The result gave Sevilla their second win in nine matches against Valencia after three draws and three defeats in the previous eight games. For Valencia it was another night. They have not won a league game after five matches. Continue to be at the bottom of the table.

There was not much to excite either group of fans for most of the half.

Sevilla thought they had a case for a penalty in the minute when Iglesias appeared to be fouled but that moment was the only real highlight in a very dull start. Valencia suffered another problem when Cesar Tarrega left the field with a hamstring injury.

Both teams had crowded midfields. Neither could create attacks with any flow. By halftime there had been five attempts in total and none of them hit the target. Isaac Romero shot a volley over for Sevilla while Valencia offered almost nothing in the final third.

Felix Correia completed 35.4 percent of his passes for Sevilla but his teammates were not much better at turning possession into chances. Valencia played with discipline. Went into the break without Dimitrievski having to make a serious save.

Sevilla finally created danger five minutes after the break. Kike Salas headed a cross well. Stole Dimitrievski made a good save. From the corner Lucas Stassin came closer when his header hit the post and rolled away.

The home team kept control after the hour. Youssouf Fofana forced Dimitrievski into another save with a low right-footed shot but the game soon fell back into the same slow rhythm as the first half.

It looked as if Valencia might get through when David Otorbi hit the post in the game.. Sevilla found the goal that the match had been missing.

From a kick Iglesias rose highest and sent a dangerous header past Dimitrievski. The late goal gave Sevilla the win. Made the home crowds patience worth it.

Sevillas clean sheet was their third in 26 matches this season. It moves them up to third before the rest of the weekends games putting them safely inside the four for now.

Valencias loss was Carlos Corberans since he took charge. His record now is two wins, three draws and one loss but the bigger picture is concerning. His team is still at the bottom still waiting for their win and now has more injury worries after Tarregas early exit.

Iglesias appeared when Sevilla needed him most. He helped. It wasn't a game but his late header gave Sevilla three points and left Valencia in a tougher spot, at the bottom.
