Ajax are dropping out of the top 4 after a disappointing loss to FC Twente.
The match between Ajax and FC Twente was crucial in the race for second place, with Ajax trailing Feyenoord by 5 points and Twente by 6. Ajax's interim coach Óscar García started Wout Weghorst, who has been searching for his first goal since October 2025, as the lone striker, while Oliver Edvardsen was surprisingly deployed on the right wing.

FC Twente dominated Ajax in the early stages of the match and were quickly rewarded when Mats Rots had the opportunity to dribble the ball from his own penalty area to Ajax's and break through the defence. The left-back then passed to Ramiz Zerrouki, who scored with a shot into the bottom corner of the net.
During the first 30 minutes, Ajax appeared extremely nervous, creating only one chance for Weghorst, who failed to score from close range against Lars Unnerstall.
However, Weghorst got his revenge soon after — Youri Baas set up Ajax's first attacking move of the match, with the ball reaching the striker via Steven Berghuis and Mika Godts, who passed to Weghorst to score neatly into the bottom corner in the 32nd minute.
FC Twente almost took the lead after half-time when Josip Šutalo carelessly lost possession just outside Ajax's penalty area, creating an opportunity for FC Twente's three forwards to punish the Croatian player. However, both of the visitors' shots were blocked, with Lucas Rosa saving Sam Lammers' shot and Youri Baas clearing the ball off the line.
Throughout most of the match, Ajax struggled to put pressure on FC Twente and were unable to maintain the stamina required to attack Unnerstall's goal. The team from Enschede seized the opportunity to regain control, gradually moving closer to taking the lead thanks to goals from Sondre Orjasaeter and Lammers.
After a Twente full-back scored the opening goal, the other continued to do the same to help Twente take the lead for the second time in the match — Bart van Rooij broke free from the Ajax defence and had plenty of space in front of him. A smart reverse pass created an opportunity for Van Rooij to score with his left foot, and the ball flew straight into the far corner of the net, evading Paes, with only ten minutes left in the game.

The poor performance of the home team was most evident in the time added on at the end of the match, when Ajax, playing terribly, could not even manage to get the ball into the FC Twente half.
FC Twente easily won at Amsterdam and overtook Ajax in the league table, taking fourth place with 50 points. Ajax, currently on 48 points, will be at least 5 points behind second-placed Feyenoord after this weekend and will face a huge challenge to secure a place in next season's UEFA Champions League.
