A late goal from Mallorca dealt a heavy blow to Real Madrid's hopes of winning the league title.

Real Madrid dominated possession for most of the game, but were made to work hard by the home team in the first 15 minutes.

The situation seemed to change when Antonio Rudiger's long pass put Kylian Mbappé in a good position, but Mallorca quickly retreated to block the shot before Mbappé crossed for Manuel Angel, who was advancing. However, Angel's header was easily caught by Leo Roman.

Mbappé continued to cause danger, receiving a high pass from Arda Güler and forcing Roman to make an excellent save with his feet. He then turned and shot the ball around the goalkeeper, but Roman managed to block it.

Román was brought on to stop the flow of play after 30 minutes, and soon afterwards Trent Alexander-Arnold's powerful shot was deflected into the goal by Guler.

All those missed opportunities came back to haunt Los Blancos in the 42 minute, when Pablo Maffeo had space on the right wing and crossed for Morlanes, who was waiting for the ball to reach the right spot before scoring with the first shot on target for the home team, beating Andriy Lunin.

After Mbappé thwarted another goal-scoring opportunity, that was the end of Real's attacks in the first 15 minutes after the interval. Alvaro Arbeloa then brought Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior into the game.

Neither of them had an immediate impact as Mallorca sat deep and tried to counterattack quickly, but Bellingham was involved in a prolonged attack that ended with Aurelien Tchouameni's off-target shot in the 77th minute.

Immediately afterwards, Eder Militao missed a chance to score with a header from a set piece, but he did not make the same mistake in the 88th minute, jumping to head in a corner from Alexander-Arnold, helping Real Madrid avoid an unfortunate defeat.

The team's lead was secured by Martin Demichelis's defensive play during extra time, followed by Mateo Joseph's precise pass to Muriqi. The latter's powerful shot from outside the box resulted in a decisive victory.

This was Mallorca's first win of the season against a top seven team when the round began, and only their second win in eight games.

Real Madrid's run of five consecutive wins in all competitions was ended, putting them at risk of falling 7 points behind in the race for the title this weekend.
