Korean K League 1
The Korean K League 1 is South Korea's top-flight football competition, featuring 12 clubs competing for the national title, continental qualification and survival in the top division. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors are the current K League 1 champions, after winning the 2025 title. The 2026 campaign is the final season under the current 12-team format before the league expands to 14 clubs in 2027.
What's new in Korean K League 1 2026?
The 2026 season features 12 clubs, including promoted sides Incheon United and Bucheon FC 1995. The campaign began on February 28 and runs through December 6, with 198 matches scheduled across 33 regular-season rounds and the final split.
The league retains its split format for the final time in 2026. During the regular season, each club faces every other team three times before the table is divided into Final A and Final B. The top six then compete against one another for the title and continental places, while the bottom six battle to avoid relegation.
The promotion and relegation system is also changing ahead of the 2027 expansion. K League 1 will increase to 14 teams next season, while Gimcheon Sangmu's unique military-club arrangement is due to change at the end of 2026. This makes the 2026 relegation battle particularly significant.
