The CAF Champions League is Africa's premier club football competition, bringing together the continent's leading teams to compete for the most prestigious prize in African club football. The 2026/27 edition features clubs from across Africa competing through preliminary rounds, a 16-team group stage and the knockout phase. Mamelodi Sundowns are the current champions, after defeating AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in the 2025/26 final to win their second CAF Champions League title.
What's new in CAF Champions League 2026/27?
The 2026/27 competition features 61 clubs, with the tournament beginning in September through two preliminary rounds. The three highest-ranked clubs — Mamelodi Sundowns, Espérance Sportive de Tunis and RS Berkane — receive byes into the second preliminary round. The other 58 teams compete in 29 two-legged first-round ties, with the winners advancing to the second preliminary round.
The 32 clubs remaining after the first preliminary round then compete in the second preliminary round, with the 16 winners securing places in the group stage. The group phase consists of four groups of four teams, with each club playing six matches, three at home and three away. The top two teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals.
The 2026/27 campaign begins with the first preliminary-round matches from September 4 to 6, followed by the return legs from September 11 to 13. The group stage is scheduled to run from November 27, 2026 to January 24, 2027, while the quarter-finals and semi-finals take place in February, March and April. The final is scheduled to be played between May 9 and May 31, 2027.

The defending champions enter the new campaign as the team to beat after winning their second CAF Champions League title in 2025/26. Sundowns will be aiming to become the first South African club to successfully defend the trophy in the modern CAF Champions League era.

Espérance Sportive de Tunis
Espérance are among Africa's most experienced clubs in continental competition and have regularly reached the latter stages of the CAF Champions League. Their strong domestic record and extensive experience in knockout football make them another serious candidate for the title.
