Indonesia beat 10-man Thailand on Penalties to win FIFA ASEAN Cup
Indonesia won the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 on October 5 after defeating 10-man Thailand 4-2 on penalties following a dramatic 2-2 draw after extra time.
The hosts needed a late equaliser from Baggott to force the shootout, having fallen behind despite holding a numerical advantage following Nicholas Mickelson’s dismissal.

Match highlight
Indonesia began aggressively, pushing forward and using their physical advantage to attack down both flanks before delivering crosses into the penalty area.
However, their finishing lacked the precision needed to turn that pressure into an early lead. Mitchell Baker repeatedly found space behind the Thai defence during the first half but was unable to beat the goalkeeper.
Thailand defended deep and remained organised under sustained pressure, while their quick counterattacks provided a threat at the other end.
Neither team could convert their opportunities, and the first half ended goalless.
The opening stages of the second period were more cautious, with both sides less willing to commit players forward. As the match wore on, however, Indonesia’s physical strength began to exert a greater influence.
The breakthrough followed a major turning point in the 81st minute, when Mickelson received his second yellow card in four minutes.
His final challenge also conceded a free-kick near the edge of the penalty area. Dean James struck through the defensive wall, and the ball deflected off Iklas Sanron before finding the net to put Indonesia ahead.

Thailand responded almost immediately. In the 84th minute, Iklas raced onto a teammate’s pass and unleashed a fierce near-post finish, making amends for his involvement in the opening goal and restoring parity.
Despite being a player short, Thailand defended resolutely through the remaining minutes to take the final into extra time.
They then stunned the hosts in the 111th minute when Peeradol scored to give them a 2-1 lead and put the trophy within reach.
Indonesia refused to concede defeat, however, and Baggott struck five minutes later to bring the teams level once more.
With no further goals before the end of 120 minutes, the title was decided from the penalty spot.
Indonesia held their nerve in the shootout, winning 4-2 to complete a tense victory in front of their home supporters.
For Thailand, it was a painful conclusion after a resilient performance with 10 men. Indonesia, meanwhile, emerged from a final full of late twists with the championship secured.
